FAQs about Social Media

  • Why has Al-Anon started using social media?

To raise public awareness of Al-Anon Family Groups among the general public. Social media is a very powerful tool. On page 112 of our Service Manual it says:
“GSO, in carrying out its responsibility for creating public information messages beyond the local level, will continually look for new ways to do so using the capabilities of social networking and emerging technologies while adhering to Al-Anon’s spiritual principles.”

  • What is the purpose of the Facebook page?

It is another way of getting Al-Anon’s name better known and telling the public about the help and support we can offer. On Page 111 of our Service Manual, it says:
“Social networking can be an important venue for carrying the message of Al-Anon as it fulfils its primary purpose of reaching millions who are not yet aware of the existence of our fellowship”

  • If I go on to Al-Anon’s Facebook page can I protect my anonymity?

Everyone needs to be responsible for protecting their own anonymity. Be aware that if you click “like" or "comment" your "friends" may see this on your Facebook. Though we have made our settings as safe and secure as we can to avoid breaking people's anonymity, we cannot completely control how Facebook uses our 'likes' or 'comments' or 'shares'. If you have any concerns please consider simply looking at the page - reading the posts as well as listening to the podcasts.

  • As a member of Al-Anon, if I “like” or “share” the Al-Anon Facebook page, will others know I am a member?
